A Belmeken-tavi parti után kissé nehezen ébredtek a versenyzők, de a friss levegő, a napsütés és néhány kávé hamar lelket vert a csapattagokba. A nap nem tartogatott több hegyet, a bolgár szakaszt nagyrészt sík terepen, főutakon kellett teljesíteni, Törökországban viszont már 8 sávos autópálya várta a résztvevőket.
A külföldi csapatok ismét kalandosan keltek át a határon, a 08-as számú Polar Bears norvégjai egy lerobbant vámos autót vontattak át, cserébe különleges bánásmódban részesültek. A 06-os rajtszámú virtualtourist.com csapat kék Moszkvicsa és nemzetközi legénysége ismét derültséget keltett, ahogy az út során mindenütt. Amikor a vámos kirakta maga elé a portugál, az olasz és az amerikai útleveleket, valamint a magyar rendszámú Moszkvics céges papírjait, majd a magyar nyelvű meghatalmazásokat, némi fejvakarás után az egészet összecsomagolta és közölte, hogy őt ezzel hagyják békén és menjenek tovább.
Thomas, a 09-es német Triple Bottom Line csapat vezére, akit jellemzően az ág is húz végre egy bontóban megvásárolta a hiányzó, Mostarban betört üveget, valamint egy új darabot az ellopott (és egyébként működésképtelen) CD lejátszó helyére.
A 04-es rajtszámú G’Roby csapat Unimogja elszántan taposta a kilométereket, bár sebességük nem ment 80 km/óra fölé, azt legalább egyenletesen tartották. Alig várják a grúz utakat, azokon a szakaszokon jó eséllyel verik a mezőnyt. Ők a logisztika nagymesterei, az elhasználódott lengéscsillapítóik helyett már megrendelték az újakat, ha minden jól megy Diyarbakirban, a kurd fővárosban már várja őket egy szerelő, hogy beépítse.
Azok a csapatok, akiknek sikerült korán elindulniuk, már kora este isztambuli városnézésre indultak, a többiek a város fő autóbusz pályaudvara mellett található hotelben próbáltak regenerálódni.

Day 5: a long run to the Bosporus channel
After the previous night’s fire-side festivities on the shores of a beautiful mountain lake, the morning felt foggy. Hot coffee and tea helped a bit, as did the prospect of big and modern roads across the flatlands of Bulgaria, and later onto Turkey’s 8-lane superhighways. But one thing stood in everyone’s way – another border crossing. In the end, all the teams eventually made it across the border and found themselves in Turkey, after countless passport checks, questions, and more than a few laughs.
Team Polar Bears got through a bit easier than the others by helping tow a broken-down car owned by a Customs Officer! This helped raise their spirits after a minor defeat in Bulgaria – the route they chose looked like it passed through a tunnel beneath some mountains, but when they arrived, they discovered the tunnel hadn’t been built yet!
Team virtualtourist.com made the customs officer smile again. They simply didn’t understand why 4 people from Portugal, Italy and the US travel in a 20-year soviet Moskvitch with Hungarian plates full of rally stickers and not having any proper car documents but curiosity was not as strong as a desire for lunch so they rather decided not to go into details and let the guys enter Turkey.
Team Triple Bottom Line had a good day, as they were finally able to replace the window that was broken in Mostar when their car was broken into. They also got a new radio, since their old one was stolen. Access to music was very much appreciated for the remainder of the Challenge, especially since the one that was stolen didn’t work anyway!
The few teams that managed to get an early start were rewarded with an opportunity to do a bit of sightseeing in downtown Istanbul. Unfortunately, most teams arrived a bit too late for that. Everyone faced a restless night in the hotel, which was near the city’s busy and bustling main bus terminal. Everyone slept as hard as they could, since the next day’s journey was to be the longest in the entire race.
